Deschutes Brewery’s Burger Month

Burger lovers take note! Each day this May, Deschutes Brewery is celebrating National Burger Month by offering up a special burger menu that features a unique (and sometimes unusual) burger special of the day. Earlier this week I was invited along with several other local media folks to have dinner and preview what’s coming up for the month.

Quite a lineup! You can see they have a wide variety of burgers to offer, including a nice selection of vegan and vegetarian specials coming up late in the month. Mondays are “fan favorite burger” days where they will solicit suggestions on social media for the burger of the day, an idea they really liked as Mondays are also “locals night” at the Pub, with the standard Pub Burger on the menu costing $7.50 (instead of the regular $12).

In fact here was Monday’s burger, The Ludwicki, with “All natural Borlen Beef patty, Face Rock Creamery aged cheddar, apple wood bacon, mayonnaise, & stoned ground mustard on a house baked brioche bun.”

Aside from the burgers, the brewery is also getting ready to introduce a whole new Pub menu, right around the middle of the month. This menu too will include an expanded focus on vegetarian offerings, and to highlight this Chef Brian Kerr (who spoke with us about the burgers, the menu, and more) sent out their (new) vegetarian pizza to the table.

It was really good: they have been tweaking the crust recipe, and the topping themselves were delicious and seemed like they had been lightly stir-fried beforehand in some kind of soy-based sauce. Not what you would expect, but it really worked!

We had also sampled two appetizers, the calamari and a sausage board, both of which I would recommend.

Another interesting highlight of the night was meeting and talking with Matt Borlen of Borlen Beef, who supplies all of the ground beef to the Pub and in turn Deschutes provides them with the Pub’s spent grain from brewing, used as cattle feed. Borlen Beef is located in Alfalfa, with approximately 300 head of cattle. They’ve been taking grain and providing beef to Deschutes since 1995, and have also expanded to collect spent grain from other local breweries—Silver Moon, Bend Brewing, McMenamins, Boneyard, and Cascade Lakes. In fact, they take in about 70,000 to 80,000 pounds of spent grain per week!

It’s going to be a good month at Deschutes if you love your burgers. Here’s their description for the month-long event:
