Food trucks that are must-visits during Covid

Since the start of the COVID-19 restrictions and limitations that went into effect last March, we’ve been staying at home and only going out when necessary. That means also assiduously avoiding any dining in at restaurants, even for outdoor dining—it’s just too risky, no matter how well the restaurants are trying to provide safe accommodations.

On the other hand, we have been enjoying the occasional takeout meal, and have really been liking a number of food trucks as we’ve tried out new ones. Food trucks are a great option during the pandemic, ideally keeping you in an open air environment and already serving food with a great to-go setup. So, in order to promote and appreciate the food trucks that are doing it right and have tasty food, here’s a short list of the ones we’ve really been liking.

Note: These all have proper covid protocols in place and wear masks, so we feel safe ordering from them.

Bluma’s Chicken & Waffles: Our current favorite, with some of the hands-down best chicken dishes we’ve had. Located at the River’s Place tap room and food cart lot, the Chicken & Waffles are the staple menu item you should try, but don’t pass on the Grilled Chicken Club which is arguably better. On weekends, Bluma’s has been offering Monte Cristo Sandwiches which people are raving about. The fries are great too. Highly recommended.

Hogan’s Hoagies: Also located at River’s Place, I think we tried The Jersey and it was quite good, with soft bread and great flavors.

Aina Kauai Style Grill: This is located at the 9th Street Village, behind Bevel Craft Brewing, and is doing terrific Hawaiian fare. We really like the Kahlua Pig Plate — delicious shredded pork, what’s not to like? — and don’t overlook the poke. (I like that there’s always a small side of poke with the dish.)

Southern Accent Bend: Also at the 9th Street Village, doing po’boys and specialty sandwiches. Southern comfort food!

Fricken Faco: The fried chicken/fish taco truck at The Lot serving up (more) comfort food which was pretty tasty. I believe in non-covid times you can sit at the top of the double decker bus to eat your meal, too.

Clearly these are barely scraping the surface of the food truck scene in Bend right now, but they’ve been standouts. Please, feel free to share others as well, and why you like them!
